A lot of TikTok ad money in Bangladesh is spent on the wrong people. A shop selling ladies' kurtis targets 'all of Bangladesh, 18 to 65, everyone', gets thousands of views from teenage boys, and decides TikTok does not work. Another shop stacks so many interests that the ad barely runs at all.
The fix is a clear TikTok advertising audience profile: a written description of who buys from you, turned into sensible settings in Ads Manager. This guide shows how to build that profile, which targeting options matter, how to use your own customer data, and how to test audiences without burning your budget.
Start with your customer, not the targeting menu
Before opening Ads Manager, write down what you already know about the people who buy. Look at your order list, your inbox and your delivery records. Answer these questions in a few lines each.
- Who buys? Rough age, gender, and whether they are students, working people, parents or business owners.
- Where are they? Which districts you deliver to, and whether most orders come from big cities or smaller towns.
- What problem does your product solve? Say it the way customers say it in messages.
- When do they buy? Salary week, before Eid, at the start of a school term, during winter.
- How do they pay? Cash on delivery, bKash, Nagad or card. This tells you how much trust you need to build.
- What do they watch on TikTok? Cooking, fashion, cricket, study tips, comedy, tech reviews.
For example, a modest-fashion page might find that most buyers are women aged 20 to 35, spread across district towns as well as cities, buying most in the three weeks before Eid, paying cash on delivery, and watching styling and cooking videos. That short profile already answers most targeting questions.
TikTok advertising audience options in Ads Manager
Ads Manager offers several ways to describe who should see your ad. Names and available options change, and some are more limited in smaller markets, so check your own account.
| Option | What it does | When it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Limits ads to a country or region | Matching your delivery or service area |
| Age and gender | Narrows by age bracket and gender | Products clearly for one group, such as ladies' wear |
| Language | Targets by app language | Rarely needed in Bangladesh; can shrink reach too much |
| Interests | People who regularly watch certain topics | Niche products such as gaming gear or baby products |
| Behaviours | Recent actions like watching, liking or sharing certain video types, or interacting with creators and hashtags | Finding people who are actively into a topic now |
| Device | Operating system, connection type, sometimes device price | Apps for one platform, or higher-priced products |
| Custom audiences | People who already know you: customers, visitors, video viewers | Retargeting and excluding past buyers |
| Lookalike audiences | New people similar to a custom audience | Finding new buyers once you have customer data |
TikTok's Ads Help Center has current details for each option. For the account setup itself, see our guide to TikTok Ads Manager account setup.
Broad or narrow: how much to restrict
TikTok's delivery system learns from who watches, clicks and buys. If you give it a very small audience, it has little room to learn and you usually pay more for each view. If you give it everyone, it may spend early budget on people who will never buy.
A practical middle path for most Bangladeshi businesses:
- Set location to where you can actually deliver or serve.
- Set age and gender only where the product clearly demands it.
- Leave interests open for the first test, or try one ad group with a few related interests against one without.
- Use narrow interest or behaviour targeting for niche products, such as IELTS coaching, fishing gear or car accessories.
If you have run Facebook ads, the thinking is similar, though TikTok relies more on the video itself. Our article on Meta ads targeting covers the same broad-versus-narrow trade-off on Facebook. If you advertise on both platforms, our Facebook ads service can work from the same customer profile.
Use your own data: custom audiences
The people most likely to buy are often the ones who already know you. Custom audiences let you reach them again, or keep them out of ads meant for new customers.
- Customer list: upload phone numbers or emails of past buyers. Only use data customers gave you, and keep the file secure.
- Website visitors: with the TikTok Pixel installed, you can reach people who viewed a product or added to cart but did not order.
- Video viewers: people who watched a large share of one of your ads, for example half or more.
- Profile engagers: people who visited your profile, followed you or interacted with your posts.
Use these audiences two ways. Retarget them with a reminder, a delivery offer or customer reviews. And exclude recent buyers from ads aimed at new people, unless your product is something they buy again, like food or cosmetics.
Lookalike audiences
Once you have a decent list of real buyers or engaged viewers, TikTok can build a lookalike audience of people with similar patterns. TikTok needs a minimum number of matched people to create one, and a seed of real buyers usually works better than a list of everyone who liked a video.
Start with the narrower lookalike setting, test it against a broad audience, and keep the one with the lower cost per delivered order. Refresh the seed list every month or two as new customers arrive.
Your video is part of the targeting
On TikTok, settings decide who could see your ad, but the first two seconds of the video decide who stays. A clear opening line acts as a filter. 'Working mothers, this lunch box keeps food warm until 2 pm' makes the right people stop and lets everyone else scroll on, which helps TikTok learn faster.
Make different videos for different segments. A coaching centre might run one video speaking to students about exam stress and another speaking to parents about results and safety. Same audience settings, very different viewers. If you need help producing these variations, our video ads editing service can cut several versions from one shoot.
A simple four-week testing plan
- Week 1: write your customer profile, install the pixel and prepare three to five videos with different hooks.
- Week 2: run two ad groups: one broad within your delivery area, one with a small set of related interests or behaviours. Use the same videos in both.
- Week 3: compare cost per order and, where possible, cost per delivered order. Pause the weaker audience. Add a retargeting ad group for video viewers and site visitors.
- Week 4: if you have enough buyers, test a lookalike audience against your best performer. Replace videos that people stop watching.
Change one thing at a time so you know what caused the difference. Your budget also limits how many audiences you can test at once, as explained in our guide to TikTok advertising cost per month.
Common audience mistakes
- Stacking many interests until the audience is tiny and expensive.
- Targeting the whole country when you only deliver to certain areas.
- Showing 'new customer' discounts to people who bought last week.
- Judging an audience after one or two days.
- Running the same video for every segment.
- Ignoring comments, which often tell you exactly who is interested and why.
FAQ
How big should my TikTok advertising audience be?
There is no single number, but avoid audiences so small that Ads Manager warns you about limited reach. For most consumer products in Bangladesh, a broad audience within your delivery area works better than a heavily narrowed one.
Should I use interests or go broad?
Test both. Broad often wins for products with wide appeal, while interests and behaviours help niche products. Let cost per order decide, not personal opinion.
Can I target only my own district?
Location options depend on what TikTok offers for Bangladesh in your account. If a precise area is not available, say the delivery area clearly in the video and on screen so people outside it scroll past.
Is it allowed to upload customer phone numbers?
TikTok allows customer list uploads, but you should only use contact details customers gave you and follow TikTok's terms. Keep the list private and do not buy or share number lists.
