Meta Ads Targeting: How to Reach the Right Audience in Bangladesh
Most Facebook and Instagram campaigns that waste money do not fail because the budget is small. They fail because the ad reaches people who will never buy, or reaches the right people with a message that does not fit them. Meta ads targeting is the set of choices that decides who sees your ad, and getting it roughly right matters more than any bidding setting.
Targeting has changed a lot in the last few years. Meta now finds buyers mainly from signals: who watches your video, who taps the button, who sends a message, who completes an order. Your job is to give the system a sensible starting point and clean signals, not to pile thirty interests on top of each other.
This guide walks through each audience option in Ads Manager, when each one makes sense for a business in Bangladesh, how to build audiences from your own customers, and the targeting mistakes we see most often with local pages and online shops.
How Meta ads targeting works today
When you set an audience, you are drawing an outer boundary. Inside that boundary, Meta decides who actually sees each ad based on how likely each person is to take the action you chose, such as a purchase, a message or a lead form. So two things shape your results: the boundary you draw and the signals you feed the system through your campaign objective, your pixel events and your creative.
If you turn on Advantage+ audience, Meta treats your age, gender and interest choices as suggestions. It may show the ad outside them when it expects a better result. Location and minimum age still act as firm limits. If you need strict control, for example because you only deliver in one district, you can switch to the original audience options. Meta's Business Help Centre lists the current audience settings, which change from time to time.
In practice, very narrow audiences push up your cost per thousand impressions and give the system fewer people to learn from. Very broad audiences with a weak ad waste money on people who scroll past. The aim is a balance: a reasonable boundary plus an ad that clearly speaks to the person you want.
Start with location, age and language
These three settings look basic, but they cause more wasted spend than any interest choice. Get them right before you touch anything else.
- Location: Match it to where you can actually serve. A restaurant in Sylhet might use a 3 to 8 km radius around the shop. An online clothing store with nationwide courier delivery can target the whole of Bangladesh, but if cash on delivery returns are high from certain areas, you can leave those areas out and watch whether the return rate drops.
- Age: Use your own sales records, not guesses. If most of your orders come from people aged 22 to 40, start there and widen later. For a coaching centre, remember the person who pays is often a parent, so test a parent audience alongside students. Meta also limits how you can target people under 18, so you can only reach them by age and location.
- Gender: Only restrict it when the product is clearly for one group, and even then think twice. During Eid, a large share of women's clothing and cosmetics orders can come from men buying gifts.
- Language: Many people in Bangladesh use Facebook with the interface set to English. Adding a Bangla language filter can quietly cut out a large part of your real audience. It is usually better to leave language open and simply write the ad in the language your buyers speak.
Detailed targeting: interests and behaviours
Detailed targeting lets you add interests and behaviours that Meta has inferred from people's activity, such as the pages they follow and the content they engage with. It is most useful for a new page or pixel that has little data of its own.
A few rules that work well in our experience:
- Group 3 to 6 closely related interests in one ad set rather than putting each interest in its own ad set. For a gadget shop, smartphones, mobile accessories and a couple of well-known phone brands can sit together.
- Avoid huge, vague interests like "Online shopping" or "Shopping and fashion" on their own. They are so broad that they behave almost like no targeting at all, but with less learning data.
- Use the "narrow further" option rarely. Each extra layer shrinks the audience and usually raises the cost per result.
- Expect some interests to be missing. Meta removed many detailed targeting options linked to sensitive topics such as health, religion and politics, so you will not find everything you look for.
Treat interests as a starting point. Once you have a few dozen purchases or leads recorded, your own data usually beats any interest list.
Custom audiences from your own customers
Custom audiences are built from people who already know your business. They are the most valuable audiences you can have, both for showing ads again and for excluding people who have already bought.
- Website visitors: People who visited your site or a specific page, tracked by the Meta pixel. For example, people who viewed a product in the last 14 days but did not buy.
- Customer list: A file of phone numbers or emails from your past orders. Many Bangladeshi shops have years of cash on delivery orders with phone numbers in a spreadsheet, and this is one of the best seeds you can use. Meta hashes the data before matching it to accounts. Only upload contacts you collected with the customer's permission.
- Page and Instagram engagement: People who liked, commented, saved or messaged your page or profile.
- Video viewers: People who watched a set share of your video, such as 50 percent or more. This is a cheap way to build a warm audience before you run sales ads.
- Lead form openers: People who opened or submitted your instant form.
Keep time windows sensible. For a fast-moving product, a 7 to 30 day window is often enough. For higher-value services such as interior design or study abroad consultancy, a 60 to 180 day window can make sense because people take longer to decide.
Lookalike audiences and seed quality
A lookalike audience asks Meta to find people who resemble a group you provide, called the seed. The seed needs at least 100 people from the target country, but results are usually more stable with 1,000 or more.
The quality of the seed matters far more than its size. A list of 800 real buyers will usually produce a better lookalike than 20,000 page likes collected through old giveaway posts. If you can, upload a customer list with order value so Meta can lean towards people similar to your best customers.
Lookalike sizes run from 1 to 10 percent of the country. A 1 percent lookalike is the closest match and the smallest. For Bangladesh, a 1 to 3 percent lookalike is often a good place to start, and you can test wider ranges once the first one is working.
Broad targeting and letting the creative do the filtering
Broad targeting means setting only location, age and perhaps gender, with no interests. It sounds risky, but it often works well once your pixel has steady conversion data, because Meta then knows what a buyer looks like for your account.
With broad targeting, your ad becomes the main filter. A video that opens with "Cotton panjabi, BDT 1,450, cash on delivery across Bangladesh" will stop people who want exactly that and let others scroll past. A vague lifestyle image with no product or price gives the system nothing to work with. The clearer your ad is about who it is for, the better broad targeting performs. If all you have is raw phone footage, a video ad editing service can cut it into short ads with a clear product, price and offer in the first seconds.
Broad targeting is weaker for brand new accounts with no conversion history, very small budgets, or very niche B2B services. In those cases, start with interests or a custom audience and move to broad once you have data.
Which audience to use at each stage
The table below is rough guidance for how a small or mid-size business in Bangladesh might split effort. Adjust the shares to your own results.
| Stage | Audience to use | Example | Share of budget |
|---|---|---|---|
| New page, little data | Location, age and 3 to 6 related interests | Home decor shop targeting interior design and home furnishing interests | Most of the budget |
| Some sales recorded | Lookalike 1 to 3 percent, plus a broad ad set | Lookalike from 1,000 past buyers | Around 60 to 80 percent |
| Warm prospects | Website visitors, video viewers, people who messaged | Viewed product in last 14 days, no purchase | Around 15 to 30 percent |
| Past customers | Customer list | New collection or Eid offer for previous buyers | Small share, raised during seasons |
Exclusions, overlap and other common mistakes
Good targeting is also about who you leave out. These are the problems we find most often when reviewing accounts:
- Not excluding buyers: If your prospecting campaign still shows ads to people who bought last week, you pay to reach people you already have. Exclude a recent purchasers list from new customer campaigns.
- Too many overlapping ad sets: Five ad sets with similar interests split your budget and your learning data. Meta will tend to favour one and starve the others. Use fewer, larger ad sets, and check the audience overlap tool in the Audiences section if you are unsure.
- Editing targeting every day: Big changes restart the learning phase. Give an ad set several days and a reasonable number of results before you judge it.
- Targeting areas you cannot serve: A dessert shop that only delivers within its city should not pay for clicks from across the country.
- Ignoring the landing page or inbox: Even perfect targeting fails if the website is slow on mobile data or if messages go unanswered for hours. For shops, a faster e-commerce website often does more for results than another audience test.
Meta ads targeting also depends on clean data. If your pixel records the wrong events, every audience built on it is weaker, so check your setup with our guide to Meta ads conversion tracking.
FAQ
What audience size is good for Meta ads in Bangladesh?
There is no fixed number, but for most consumer products an audience of a few hundred thousand to several million people gives Meta enough room to find buyers. Very small audiences, such as a few thousand people, usually lead to high costs unless they are warm retargeting audiences.
Should I turn on Advantage+ audience?
For accounts with steady conversion data, it is worth testing against your usual audience in a separate ad set. For a new account, or when you must stay strictly inside one area or age group, start with original audience options and test Advantage+ later.
How long should I wait before changing an audience?
In most cases, wait at least 4 to 7 days and until the ad set has spent a meaningful amount, often two to three times your target cost per result. Judging after one day usually leads to wrong decisions.
