Barta Ghor

The brief

A national online daily in Bangladesh has to look like a full newspaper from the first day. Readers expect many sections on one long homepage, proper Bangla dates and fast pages, because most of them arrive from Facebook on a phone. The paper also needs a clear newsroom and room for ads, since ads pay the bills.

What we built

• A homepage that reads like a daily: a date line with the Bangla calendar, featured stories beside the logo, a red breaking ticker, the lead story and latest and popular tabs.
• Category blocks and country-wide news with a division and district picker, so readers find local stories fast.
• Video, photo gallery and online polls, plus an archive search by date.
• Newsroom roles: Admin, Editor and Reporter. Reporters send stories for review and cannot publish. Stories can be scheduled and previewed.
• Eight ad places, including an inline ad every four paragraphs, with banner or AdSense code and click counts.

How it was built

Barta Ghor is built with Laravel and has its own admin panel for news, categories, the homepage layout, polls, ads and settings. The design is green with a mint menu bar and thin red lines, in the style readers know from big Bangla dailies. The Bangla font is served from the site's own domain, homepage blocks are cached and ads and videos load only on scroll, so pages stay quick on mobile data. A sitemap, RSS feed and news structured data help search engines.
