Every day, people in Bangladesh search Google for things like school bag wholesale, dental clinic near me or wedding planner Sylhet. Some of those searches end in a phone call or an order. SEO for business is the work of making sure your business is one of the options people see at that moment, and that your page convinces them to get in touch.

Many owners hear the word SEO from agencies and freelancers without a clear explanation of what is actually being done. This guide explains it in plain terms: how Google decides which pages to show, the main parts of SEO, how it compares with paid ads, what it usually costs and how long it takes, and how to tell whether it is working for you.

What SEO for business means in plain words

SEO stands for search engine optimization. For a business, it means improving your website and your online presence so that Google shows your pages for searches your customers make, without you paying for each click.

The important word is business. A personal blog might want any traffic it can get. A business wants the right visitors: people who are likely to buy, book or call. Ranking first for a broad phrase that brings students and job seekers does little for a wholesale supplier. Ranking for bulk t-shirt printing price might bring only a few dozen visitors a month, but many of them could become orders.

So business SEO always starts with a question: what do our real customers type into Google before they buy from someone like us?

How Google decides which business to show

Google works in three broad steps. It crawls the web by following links and reading sitemaps. It indexes pages it thinks are worth keeping, storing what each one is about. When someone searches, it ranks the indexed pages, trying to put the most useful ones first.

Google uses many signals, but for a typical business they boil down to a few questions:

  • Can Google reach and read the page? Blocked pages, broken links and very slow sites hold everything back.
  • Does the page match what the person searched for? A page about AC servicing should clearly say what you service, where and how to book.
  • Is the page genuinely helpful? Specific prices, real photos, clear answers and honest details beat vague marketing text.
  • Do other people trust this business? Reviews, mentions on other sites and links from relevant sources all count.
  • Is the business close to the searcher? For local searches, distance and the Google Business Profile matter a lot.

Google's SEO Starter Guide covers the official side of this if you want to read it straight from the source.

The main parts of SEO

SEO is not one task. It is a set of related jobs, and different businesses need different amounts of each.

PartWhat it involvesWho it matters most for
Technical SEOMaking sure pages can be crawled and indexed, load fast on mobile and have no broken links or duplicate versionsEvery site, especially online shops with many pages
On-page SEOPage titles, headings, clear service and product pages, matching what people searchEvery site
ContentHelpful articles and guides that answer buyers' questionsBusinesses where customers research before buying
Local SEOGoogle Business Profile, reviews, consistent name, address and phone numberShops, restaurants, clinics, coaching centres and service businesses
Off-page SEOMentions and links from other relevant websitesCompetitive markets and national brands

A restaurant in Rajshahi might get most of its results from local SEO and a few good pages. An online shop selling across Bangladesh needs strong technical and product-page work, and often e-commerce SEO that deals with categories, filters and hundreds of product pages.

SEO compared with paid ads

Paid ads such as Google Ads or Facebook ads put you in front of people quickly, but you pay for every click or view, and the traffic stops when the budget stops. SEO takes longer to build, but a page that ranks well keeps bringing visitors without a cost per click.

  • Ads suit you when you need enquiries this month, you are testing a new product, or you run seasonal offers such as Eid or Pohela Boishakh sales.
  • SEO suits you when you plan to be in business for years, customers search for what you sell, and you want to reduce how much you depend on ad spend.

Many businesses use both. Ads bring sales while SEO grows, and the ad data shows which search phrases actually lead to orders, which tells you where SEO effort will pay off. We compare the two in more depth in SEO vs Google Ads.

Why traffic is not the same as customers

A common disappointment goes like this: an agency reports that visitors have doubled, but the phone is not ringing any more than before. Usually the new traffic is coming from searches that do not lead to sales, such as general how-to questions from people in other countries.

Searches have different intent. Someone typing what is digital printing wants to learn. Someone typing digital printing shop Gazipur price wants to buy. Good business SEO works on the buying searches first, then adds helpful content that leads readers towards your service pages.

Also check the page people land on. If it has no clear price guidance, no phone or WhatsApp button and nothing about delivery or payment, visitors leave. Our article on website traffic but no customers walks through how to diagnose this.

What SEO costs and how long it takes in Bangladesh

Quotes vary widely, from a few thousand taka a month for basic packages to BDT 50,000 or more a month for competitive e-commerce or national campaigns. The price depends on how much work the site needs, how competitive your market is, and how much content and technical work is included. A one-off fix of an existing site may cost less than several months of ongoing work.

When comparing quotes, ask what will actually be done each month: which pages will be written or improved, which technical problems will be fixed, and how results will be reported. A cheap package that only adds directory links is rarely worth it.

On timing, rough expectations in our experience look like this:

  • First 1 to 2 months: fixing technical problems, setting up tracking and Google Business Profile, improving main pages. Little visible change yet.
  • Months 3 to 6: local listings and less competitive phrases usually start to move. Enquiries from search begin to show.
  • Months 6 to 12: more competitive phrases improve if the work continues and the content is genuinely useful.

New domains take longer than established ones. Sites with thin content or past spam problems also tend to be slower.

How to tell whether SEO is working

Rankings for a handful of phrases are easy to show in a report, but they are not the goal. Look at measures closer to money:

  1. Search Console clicks and queries: are more people finding you, and for phrases that relate to what you sell?
  2. Leads from organic search: track phone clicks, WhatsApp clicks, form submissions and orders in Google Analytics, filtered by organic traffic.
  3. Google Business Profile actions: calls, direction requests and website visits from your listing.
  4. Ask customers: a simple how did you find us? at order or booking time fills gaps that analytics miss.

Review these monthly, and compare each month with the same month last year where you can, because many businesses in Bangladesh have strong seasonal swings around Eid, the wedding season and the school calendar.

FAQ

Is SEO worth it for a very small business?

If your customers search Google for what you offer, SEO for business is usually worth it, even at a small scale. A complete Google Business Profile and a few clear service pages can bring steady enquiries. If your product is bought mostly on impulse through social media, ads and content on Facebook or TikTok may matter more.

Can anyone guarantee a first-page ranking?

No. Google does not sell organic positions, and rankings change with competition and updates. A provider can promise specific work and honest reporting, not a fixed position.

Do I need to write blog posts?

Not always. Strong service and product pages can rank well on their own. Articles help when your customers research before buying and you can answer their questions better than others.

Is SEO a one-time job?

The first cleanup is a one-time project, but competitors keep improving and your offers change. Most businesses need at least light ongoing work to hold and grow their position.
