You have a website and your service pages are written, yet Google still shows your competitors first. This is where on-page SEO for beginners starts. Very often the gap is not money or backlinks. It is how each page is put together: the title, the headings, the first few lines and whether the page actually answers what people searched for.
This guide walks through the basics. You will learn how to check search intent before you write, how to write titles and meta descriptions people want to click, how to structure a page, how to use your main keyword without stuffing it, and how to use images and internal links. A checklist at the end helps you apply it to any page in about an hour.
What on-page SEO means and what it does not
On-page SEO is everything you control on the page itself: the text, the headings, the page title shown in Google, the URL, the images and the links to your other pages. Its job is to make it obvious, to both Google and a reader, what the page is about and why it is worth reading.
It sits next to two other areas. Technical SEO decides whether Google can crawl and index the page at all, which we cover in technical SEO basics. Off-page SEO is about other sites mentioning and linking to you. On-page work is usually the cheapest and fastest of the three, because you can change it today without waiting on anyone. That is why on-page SEO for beginners is the best place to start.
What on-page SEO is not: repeating a keyword twenty times, hiding text, or writing for a robot. Google's systems understand synonyms and context well. A page written clearly for a real customer almost always does better than one written to hit a keyword count.
Start with search intent, not the keyword
Before you edit a page, type your main search phrase into Google on your phone and look at the first page of results. Those results show what Google thinks the searcher wants. That is search intent, and it matters more than any single tag on the page.
Searches usually fall into one of four types:
- Learning: how to start a home bakery. People want a guide or explanation.
- Comparing: best IELTS coaching in Sylhet. People want options, prices and reasons to choose.
- Buying or booking: birthday cake delivery Chattogram. People want a page where they can order or call now.
- Finding a brand: people type your business name and want your site or Facebook page.
If the top results for your phrase are all shop pages with prices, a long blog post will struggle to rank there. If they are all how-to guides, a thin service page will struggle. Match the format first. Then try to be more useful than what is already ranking: clearer prices, real photos, delivery areas, honest answers to common questions.
Titles and meta descriptions that earn the click
The title tag is the blue headline in Google results. It is one of the strongest on-page signals and the first thing a searcher reads. The meta description is the grey text under it. It does not directly affect rankings, but a good one gets more clicks.
Practical rules for titles:
- Keep it to roughly 50 to 60 characters so it does not get cut off.
- Put the main topic near the start.
- Make every page's title different. Ten pages titled Home | My Company tell Google nothing.
- Write for a person: Custom Birthday Cakes in Chattogram, Same-Day Delivery beats Cake, Cakes, Best Cake Shop, Cake BD.
For meta descriptions, aim for about 120 to 160 characters. Say what the page offers and one concrete detail that helps the searcher decide, such as price range, delivery area or cash on delivery. Google sometimes rewrites descriptions, but a clear one is still used more often than not.
| Element | Weak example | Better example |
|---|---|---|

Headings, URL and the first paragraph
Each page should have one H1, the main headline visible on the page. It should match the title closely, though it does not need to be identical. Under it, use H2 headings for the main sections and H3 headings for points inside a section. Think of headings as a table of contents. A visitor who only reads the headings should still understand what the page covers.
Do not pick a heading level because of its font size. If a heading looks too big or small, the designer should change the style, not the level. Some cheap themes hard-code the wrong levels, and a cleaner custom website design fixes that at the root.
Your first paragraph should confirm the reader is in the right place within two or three sentences. Use the main phrase there naturally. A coaching centre page might open with what is taught, for which class, where and how to enrol, before any history about the founder.
For URLs, use short lowercase words with hyphens that describe the page. Decide on the URL before publishing, because changing it later needs a redirect.
Writing the content: useful, specific, not padded
This is where most pages win or lose. Google tries to rank pages that leave the searcher satisfied, and readers leave quickly when a page is vague. A few habits help a lot:
- Answer the real questions. Write down the questions customers ask on the phone or in Messenger: price, delivery time, payment by bKash or Nagad, return policy, areas served. Answer them on the page.
- Be specific. Delivery in 2 to 3 days inside Bangladesh, cash on delivery available is more useful than fast and reliable delivery.
- Show proof you are real. Real photos of your work, your address or service area and a working phone number build trust with both readers and Google.
- Cut the filler. Long intros about how important the internet is waste the reader's time. Get to the point.
How long should a page be? As long as it needs to be to answer the question well, and no longer. A simple product page might need 300 words. A buyer's guide may need 1,500. Our article on writing SEO-friendly website content goes deeper into this.
On keywords: use the main phrase in the title, the H1, the first paragraph and perhaps one H2. After that, write naturally. Use related words your customers use, including common Banglish spellings if that is how people search for your product. Reading the page out loud is a good test. If a sentence sounds odd, it probably reads odd to Google too.
Images and alt text
Images make a page easier to understand and help it look trustworthy. They are also the most common reason pages load slowly, which hurts both rankings and sales on mobile data.
- Resize before uploading. A phone photo can be 4,000 pixels wide. If your layout shows it at 800 pixels, resize it first.
- Compress and use WebP. Most images can lose a large share of their file size with no visible change.
- Name files clearly. jamdani-saree-red.webp says more than IMG_2041.jpg.
- Write alt text. Describe what the image shows in a short phrase, for screen readers and for Google Images. Do not stuff it with keywords.
Internal links and a clear next step
Internal links are links from one page on your site to another. They help visitors find related information and help Google understand which pages matter and how they connect. A new page with no links pointing to it can take a long time to get noticed.
Each time you publish a page, link to it from two or three older related pages. Use anchor text that describes the destination, such as our wedding cake prices, not click here. Our guide to internal linking for SEO explains how to plan this across a whole site.
Every page also needs a clear next step. On a service page, that might be a call button, a WhatsApp link or a short enquiry form near the top and again at the bottom. Good rankings mean little if visitors cannot see how to contact you.
On-page SEO for beginners: a page checklist
Use this list each time you publish or update a page:
- Search the main phrase on Google and note what kind of pages rank.
- Write a unique title of about 50 to 60 characters with the topic near the start.
- Write a meta description of about 120 to 160 characters with one concrete detail.
- Use one H1, then logical H2 and H3 headings.
- Confirm the topic in the first two or three sentences.
- Answer the questions customers really ask, with specifics.
- Resize, compress and name images, and add short alt text.
- Add two to four internal links with descriptive anchor text.
- Check the page on a phone: readable text, tappable buttons, nothing jumping around.
- Make the next step obvious: call, message, order or enquire.

FAQ
How soon do on-page changes show results?
For pages Google already crawls often, changes to titles and content can show up in a few days to a few weeks. For a new site with little history, expect several months before rankings settle, even when the pages are well done.
Can a page rank without backlinks?
Yes, for less competitive and local searches, a well-written page that matches intent can rank on its own. For very competitive phrases, you usually also need mentions and links from other trusted sites.
Should I write pages in Bangla or English?
Write in the language your customers search in. Many businesses in Bangladesh get searches in both, so check Search Console to see which phrases already bring visitors, then write for those.
Do I need an SEO plugin?
On WordPress, a plugin such as Yoast or Rank Math makes it easy to edit titles and descriptions. It does not do the SEO for you. The plugin's green light only checks basic rules, not whether the page is genuinely helpful.
