10 Google Ads Tips for Better Results on a Small Budget

Nexteio 9 min read

Most Google Ads accounts we look at in Bangladesh are not losing money because Google is too expensive. They lose money because the budget goes to the wrong searches, the ads send people to a homepage, and nobody can say which clicks turned into a phone call or an order.

The Google Ads tips in this article come from setting up and fixing campaigns for service businesses, coaching centres and online shops. None of them need a big budget. Most need an hour of setup and the habit of checking the account once a week.

If you are starting fresh, work through the tips in order. If your ads are already running, jump to the one that matches the problem you see.

1. Start with phrase and exact match, not broad match

Broad match lets Google show your ad for anything it decides is related. A coaching centre bidding on “IELTS coaching” with broad match can end up paying for “IELTS book pdf”, “IELTS exam fee” or “free IELTS mock test”. Those people are not planning to enrol.

With a small budget, start with phrase match and exact match. You get fewer clicks, but each click is much closer to what you sell. Once the account has conversion data and a solid negative list, you can test broad match in a separate campaign and compare the cost per lead side by side.

If you need help building the first list, our guide to Google Ads keyword research walks through it step by step.

2. Add negative keywords before the first click

Negative keywords stop your ad from showing for searches you do not want. Most advertisers add them after a week of wasted spend. Add a starter list before launch instead.

These negatives fit most Bangladeshi businesses:

  • Free stuff: free, pdf, download, apk
  • Job seekers: job, jobs, salary, circular, career, vacancy
  • Learners: course, tutorial, training, meaning, definition (unless you sell training)
  • Wrong product condition: used, second hand, repair (if you only sell new items)
  • Places you do not serve: district or city names outside your delivery area

Many people here also search in Banglish or in Bangla script. A product search in Bangla can be just as valuable as the English one, but job and free-download searches appear in both languages too, so check for both.

3. Keep each ad group to one clear theme

An ad group with 25 mixed keywords forces one set of ads to answer very different searches. Split keywords by what the person wants. For an AC service company, “AC repair”, “AC installation” and “AC servicing price” each deserve their own ad group, with headlines that repeat those words.

Three to ten closely related keywords per group is a sensible range. Tighter groups usually lift click-through rate and ad relevance, which are two of the three parts of Quality Score. The third part is landing page experience, which tip 5 covers. A better Quality Score generally means you pay less per click for the same position.

4. Set up conversion tracking before you spend real money

Without tracking, you only know how many people clicked. You cannot tell which keyword brought a customer and which one brought nothing, and Google's automated bidding has nothing useful to learn from.

Track the actions that actually lead to money:

  • Contact form or order form submissions (count the thank-you page or the form success event)
  • Taps on the call button, plus calls from the call asset in your ad
  • Clicks on a WhatsApp or Messenger button
  • Completed online orders, with the order value if your site can pass it

Cash on delivery adds a twist. An order placed is not money received, and many shops see a share of COD orders refused at the door. Compare ad-driven orders with delivered orders every week, and if you can, upload confirmed sales back into Google Ads as offline conversions. Google's own help page on conversion tracking lists the options, and our Google Ads conversion tracking guide explains the setup in plain terms. If tag setup feels too technical, our Google Ads service includes conversion tracking as part of every campaign setup.

5. Send clicks to a page that matches the ad

Sending ad traffic to your homepage is one of the most expensive habits in Google Ads. Suppose your ad says “Men's panjabi from BDT 1,450, cash on delivery across Bangladesh”. The click should land on the panjabi collection with prices visible, not on a homepage slider showing winter jackets.

A good ad landing page usually has:

  • A headline that repeats the promise in the ad
  • A price or starting price, or at least a clear price range
  • One main action: call, WhatsApp, or a short order form with three or four fields
  • Fast loading on mobile data, since most clicks here come from phones
  • Trust details: real photos, address, delivery and return terms, reviews

Our article on building a high-converting landing page goes through layout and copy in more detail. If your current site makes it hard to add pages like this, a WordPress website with simple landing page templates lets you create a new page for each campaign without a developer.

6. Write ads with specifics, and use every relevant asset

Responsive search ads let you add up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions. Use that space for facts a buyer cares about: price range, delivery areas and time, payment methods such as bKash, Nagad or COD, warranty, and how long you have been in business. Headlines like “Best Quality Service” blend into every other ad on the page.

Then fill in the assets. Sitelinks can point to specific services or product categories. Callouts can carry short points like “Free delivery over BDT 2,000”, as long as it is true. A call asset puts your number right in the ad, and a location asset shows your address if you link a Google Business Profile. Ads with more assets take up more space and give people more reasons to click.

7. Get location, schedule and device settings right

In location settings, choose the option that targets people who are in, or regularly in, your chosen locations. The default also includes people who are only interested in those places, which can bring clicks from people far away who will never visit or order.

If you deliver only to certain districts, target only those. If nobody answers the phone after 10 pm, do not run call-focused ads at night. After a few weeks, check the device report too. For some B2B services, desktop visitors may convert better. For most consumer products here, mobile does almost all the work.

8. Move to Smart Bidding only when you have data

Automated strategies like Maximize Conversions and Target CPA can work well, but they learn from your conversion data. With only three or four conversions a month, they are guessing. A common rule of thumb is to wait until a campaign records a few dozen conversions a month before setting a target CPA.

Until then, Manual CPC or Maximize Clicks with a maximum bid limit keeps costs under control while you collect data. When you do switch, expect a learning period of one to two weeks. Avoid changing bids, budgets and ads every day during that time, because each big change can restart the learning.

9. Keep brand searches in their own campaign

People who search your business name already know you. These clicks are usually cheap and convert very well. If they sit in the same campaign as generic searches like “wedding photographer” or “school management software”, the good numbers from brand searches hide how the generic keywords are really doing.

Put brand keywords in a separate, low-budget campaign. That way you can judge your non-brand cost per lead honestly, and still show up when a competitor bids on your name.

10. Review the search terms report every week

The search terms report shows the actual words people typed before clicking your ad. It is the most useful screen in Google Ads, and many advertisers never open it. Every week, scan it, add irrelevant terms as negatives, and add strong new terms as keywords.

A simple routine keeps an account healthy without eating your whole day:

TaskHow oftenRough time
Read search terms, add negativesWeekly20–30 minutes
Match conversions against real leads or delivered ordersWeekly15 minutes
Pause weak ads and keywords that have enough dataEvery 2–4 weeks30 minutes

Review budget, bid strategy and locationsMonthly30–45 minutes

How to judge your budget and results

Click prices vary a lot by industry. Local repair and home services often cost far less per click than study abroad, real estate or software, where many businesses compete for the same buyers. Many small businesses in Bangladesh start a single search campaign somewhere around BDT 500–2,000 per day and give it four to six weeks before judging it.

Judge results by cost per lead or cost per sale, not cost per click. Work out what a lead is worth before you start. If an average job earns you BDT 6,000 in profit and roughly one in four leads becomes a customer, each lead is worth about BDT 1,500. Paying BDT 600 per lead is fine. Paying BDT 2,000 means something needs fixing, whether that is keywords, the landing page or how fast you reply to enquiries.

Common mistakes that quietly waste budget

  • Accepting auto-applied recommendations without reading what they change
  • Leaving the Display Network switched on inside a Search campaign
  • Judging a campaign after three days and a handful of clicks
  • Changing keywords, bids and ads all at once, so you never know what worked
  • Counting page views or minor clicks as conversions
  • Replying to WhatsApp leads hours later, when the buyer has already called a competitor

FAQ about Google Ads tips

How many keywords should a new campaign have?

For a small business, 15–40 closely related keywords split into three to six ad groups is usually enough. More keywords spread a small budget too thin and make the account harder to manage.

Why do my ads get clicks but no calls or messages?

Check three things in order: the search terms report (are the searches relevant?), the landing page on a phone (are the offer and contact option obvious?), and your tracking (are calls and WhatsApp clicks actually being recorded?). One of these is almost always the cause.

How long until a campaign performs well?

Ads can start getting clicks within a day of approval. Getting the cost per lead to a stable, acceptable level usually takes four to eight weeks of weekly cleanup.

Should I hire someone or run ads myself?

If you can set aside an hour or two each week and follow the steps above, running a small account yourself is realistic. If you lack time, or your spend is large enough that mistakes are costly, an experienced manager often pays for themselves through less wasted spend.
