Google Ads Conversion Tracking: A Simple Beginner's Guide
Many small businesses in Bangladesh run Google Ads for months without knowing which clicks turned into customers. The account shows clicks and spend, the phone rings sometimes, and nobody can say which keyword or ad brought the call. Google Ads conversion tracking fixes that by recording the actions that matter after someone clicks your ad.
Tracking is not only for reports. Smart bidding strategies such as Maximize conversions learn from the conversions you record. If tracking is missing or wrong, Google optimises for the wrong thing, and you pay for it.
This guide explains what to track, the three main ways to set it up, a step-by-step setup with Google Tag Manager, how to track WhatsApp clicks and offline sales, and how to check that the numbers are real.
What Google Ads conversion tracking actually records
When someone clicks your ad, Google adds a click identifier to the landing page address. A small piece of code on your website, the Google tag, stores that identifier in a first-party cookie. When the visitor later completes an action you have defined, such as submitting a form or reaching an order confirmation page, the tag sends a conversion back to Google Ads and links it to the original click.
That link is what lets you see conversions by campaign, ad group, keyword and search term. It also lets you see cost per conversion, which is the number that tells you whether a campaign is worth keeping.
A conversion is counted against the date of the click, not the date of the action. By default, Google counts actions that happen within 30 days of the click, and you can change this window in the conversion settings. Expect a short delay of a few hours before new conversions show in reports.
Decide what counts as a conversion before you set anything up
The most common mistake happens before any code is added: tracking the wrong action. A page view of your contact page is not a lead. A click on an "Order now" button is not an order. Pick actions that represent real business value.
| Business type | Primary conversion | Useful secondary conversions |
|---|---|---|
| Online shop with checkout | Completed purchase with order value | Add to cart, begin checkout |
| Service business, such as AC repair or interior design | Submitted quote form | Click on phone number, WhatsApp click |
| Coaching centre or training institute | Admission inquiry form | Brochure download, call click |
| Restaurant or clinic | Phone call or booking | Direction click, menu view |
In Google Ads, a primary conversion is used in the Conversions column and by bidding. A secondary conversion is only for observation. Keep one or two primary actions per campaign goal, and set the softer actions as secondary so they do not confuse bidding.
Three ways to install the tracking code
You can send conversions to Google Ads in three main ways. Each works. The right one depends on your website and who maintains it.
- Google tag added directly: You paste the global tag into every page and an event snippet on the confirmation page. Simple for a small static site, but harder to manage as you add more events.
- Google Tag Manager (GTM): You install the GTM container once, then add and change tags from the GTM dashboard without editing the website code again. This is what we recommend for most business sites.
- Import from Google Analytics 4: If GA4 already records key events correctly, you can link GA4 to Google Ads and import those events as conversions. It is quick, but GA4 and Google Ads count conversions slightly differently, so numbers will not always match.
If you use WordPress, plugins such as Site Kit or a GTM plugin can install the container for you. Custom sites usually need a developer to add the container code once. If your site needs rebuilding anyway, ask for tracking to be included in the job, since adding it later is often harder. Our WordPress website service includes a clean GTM setup for this reason.
Step-by-step setup with Google Tag Manager
Here is the process for a typical lead form that sends the visitor to a thank-you page after submission.
- In Google Ads, open Goals, then Conversions, and create a new conversion action. Choose Website and enter your domain.
- Choose to set up the conversion manually. Pick a category that matches the action, such as "Submit lead form" or "Purchase".
- Give it a clear name, for example "Quote form - thank you page". Vague names cause confusion months later.
- Set the value. For leads you can use a fixed estimated value or no value. For purchases, use the real order value passed from the website.
- Set the count. Use One for leads, so a person who submits twice is counted once. Use Every for purchases, since each order is real revenue.
- Save, then choose Use Google Tag Manager and copy the Conversion ID and Conversion label.
- In GTM, add a Conversion Linker tag that fires on all pages. This helps store click information correctly.
- Add a Google Ads Conversion Tracking tag, paste the ID and label, and set the trigger to the thank-you page URL, for example a page view where the path contains /thank-you.
- Use GTM Preview mode to submit a test form and confirm the tag fires only on the thank-you page. Then publish the container.
If your form does not redirect to a thank-you page, you can trigger the tag on a form submission event instead. Some form builders show a success message without changing the page, and in that case a developer may need to push a small event to the data layer when the form succeeds.
Tracking WhatsApp clicks, calls and offline sales
In Bangladesh, a large share of customers prefer to call or send a WhatsApp message instead of filling in a form. If you only track forms, your Google Ads conversion tracking will undercount, and bidding will undervalue the campaigns that drive calls.
- WhatsApp clicks: In GTM, create a click trigger for links that contain wa.me or api.whatsapp.com, and fire a separate conversion action on it. Treat it as a softer signal than a form, because not every click leads to a message.
- Phone number clicks: Create a trigger for links that start with tel: and track them the same way. This works well on mobile, where most people tap the number.
- Calls from ads: Call assets let people call straight from the ad. Detailed call reporting depends on what Google supports in your country, so if it is not available, track the click on the call button instead.
- Offline sales: For high-value services like real estate or study abroad consultancy, the real sale happens days later. You can save the click identifier from the landing page in a hidden form field, record which leads became customers, and upload them to Google Ads later as offline conversions.
Offline imports take more work, but they teach Google which searches bring buyers, not just form fillers. For businesses with long sales cycles, this is often where the biggest improvement comes from.
Enhanced conversions
Some conversions get lost because of browser privacy settings, blocked cookies or people switching devices. Enhanced conversions help fill this gap. When someone submits a form or places an order, the tag sends a hashed version of their email or phone number, and Google matches it with signed-in Google accounts.
You turn it on in the settings of your conversion action and in your tag. You will need to accept Google's customer data terms in the account. Mention in your privacy policy that you use this kind of measurement. For most lead and e-commerce sites, it is worth enabling once basic tracking is working.
How to test and check your numbers
A tag that fires is not the same as a tag that counts correctly. Check these points before you trust the data.
- Use Google Tag Assistant to visit your site through a test click and confirm the conversion tag fires once, on the right page.
- In Google Ads, check the status of each conversion action. It should move to "Recording conversions" after real conversions come in. "No recent conversions" or "Inactive" means something needs attention.
- Each week, compare Google Ads conversions with your real records: form emails, orders in your dashboard, or calls logged by your team. A gap of 10 to 20 percent is normal. A gap of 2 or 3 times means double counting or a broken tag.
- After any website redesign, retest everything. New page addresses and new forms are the most common reason tracking silently stops.
Google's own Google Ads Help Centre has setup articles for each conversion type if you need more detail on a specific case.
Common conversion tracking mistakes
- Counting any page view, such as the homepage, as a conversion.
- Firing the tag on a button click instead of a successful submission, which also counts failed or empty forms.
- Leaving the thank-you page open to direct visits or refreshes, so the same lead is counted many times.
- Recording the same purchase twice, once from the Google tag and once from a GA4 import, both set as primary.
- Leaving old test conversion actions as primary, so bidding chases actions that no longer exist.
- Not passing order value for an online shop, which makes return on ad spend impossible to measure.
FAQ
Is Google Ads conversion tracking free?
Yes. There is no charge for creating conversion actions, using Google Tag Manager or using enhanced conversions. The only cost is the time or developer help needed to set it up.
Do I need a developer?
For a WordPress site with a thank-you page, many owners can do it themselves with GTM. For custom-built sites, forms without a thank-you page, or order value tracking, a developer usually saves you time and avoids errors.
How long before I see conversions in my account?
New conversions often appear within a few hours. The status of a new conversion action can take a day or so to update after the first real conversion.
Can I track Facebook Messenger chats from Google Ads?
You can track the click on a Messenger link the same way as a WhatsApp click. What happens inside the chat is not visible to Google, so treat it as a soft conversion and compare it with the leads your team actually receives.
Once tracking is in place, the next step is using that data to bring in better leads. Our guide on getting more leads from Google Ads covers what to change first.
